About the Artist

John Urquidi graduated from Ventura College, receiving several scholarship awards and a degree in commercial art.

”I grew up in the Santa Monica mountains near what is now called Pt. Mugu State Park, and have enjoyed art from a very early age. After making it to the top of the Sierra Nevada’s Mt. Whitney at age nine, I realized my fascination with the outdoors could likely last forever.

I seem to be moving towards an economy of brushwork, where the viewer has more leeway to interpret shape and color and texture. I've always been fascinated with the mechanical and revered the natural."

I paint to capture an instance and try to create an interpretation pleasing to me. Sometimes I paint just to quiet my mind. Usually for me, a 'painting' becomes a thought process where, I try to describe some fleeting idea, but it inevitably goes and I'm left with this object people call a 'painting'. Like a hiker leaves tracks or a sailboat leaves a wake.
